The Chip Cone

Droey has been working on a costume with a couple of friends, Chad and Leo. So why is this chip cone such an important feature?

One of the props was a giant space gun, which Chad insisted on making, he loves his weapons. Droey and Leo worked on other parts of the costume, such as the headpiece. Chad continued to work on the gun but needed a cone shape. While he pondered over the mater, Droey and Leo went to get some lunch.

For a change they fancied chips and so bought a cone each, the chips were lovely but hot enough to burn their mouths! Leo finished first, with Droey still eating as they were about to return to Chad. Droey suddenly realized that they had bough cones, which might be the right size for what Chad wanted! As it turned out, Chad was delighted with the cone and glad that Droey hadn't thrown it away. The gun was completed with the rest of the costume, and the day had been saved by a chip cone.

Can you guess what the costume was going to be? The clues you'll be able to find are in the gun and Droey's shirt of the day. If you think you can guess what they were making, let me know in the comments!

Lacy in the Mall

Lacy is supposed to be staying behind in class today to get on with some work. But she preferred the idea of going out to the shopping center!

Lacy gets on the phone to one of her friends as she holds her drink that was purchased from the recently opened TaGo. Meanwhile she's probably got someone else trying to call her to talk her into coming back to do her work. But Lacy thinks she'll just get on with it when she gets home, whenever that is!

Lacy's skin-tone seems to get darker each time I draw her! It's supposed to be a cream colour but when scanned that colour ends up looking closer to brown, which is what's been done here. I used a tan pen and went over her skin twice to match the tone, only it seems darker than ever! I need to invest in more skin-toned pens so that I can make everyone's skin-tones consistent and accurate.

My only other problem with this piece is the purple cup. It stands out too much since the rest of the illustration is made up from yellows, browns, creams and greys. The cup was not meant to be the vocal point of the piece yet it feels like it is. I wouldn't want to change the colour of the cup but perhaps add some more purple elements to the background; perhaps the greys could have been very desaturated purples?

What's your opinion? How do you think I could have better used the purple? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!

Draw This In Your Style | The Large Jacket

Draw This In Your Style is a life saving boredom killer! Here's one of a very interesting looking jacket.

I wish I could get the original image for you but this was saved on my Pinterest which I no longer have, down to a technical issue regarding my account. Not being able to show the original image doesn't really allow this one to have much appeal as it ends up looking more like an original piece. If anyone happens to find the original one of these I would be most grateful if you were able to send it to me so I can unite these depictions of the girl in the large jacket!

Lexi Gets Her Gloves On

Finger-less gloves can look cool, but trust Lexi to buy gloves that are also Crocs!

I found out that these gloves exist and so knew exactly who should put them on. I gave Lexi a red pair of Croc gloves to compliment her new bandanna. You may not have noticed but Lexi's given herself a new look after that very rainy day some time ago!

This illustration was sketched out in pencil but erased thoroughly so that I could colour the piece to look realistic. While still quite cartoony, there is an accurate depiction of shape and the shading (though it could be darker) is noticeable.

What do you think of Lexi's new look? You'll be able to get a full look of her new design soon. I think this new design is going to be easier to work with, and that's great!

Martin's Working Late

Martin is known for being the zombie artist, simply because he's always so tired out by his work!

Very few sounds are heard from Martin's room. It's normal for a room to be quiet just after twenty to three, but in comparison to most rooms, Martin's is actually quite a bustle! Most people are asleep, or sat looking at screens. There are no active screens tonight, and no sleeping souls. There is the clink of a brush tapping a shot glass which has been used for storing water. The brush dips into the water and swirls around for a couple of seconds before coming back out to be tapped against the glass again.

Martin draws his brush back to him and picks up a slightly darker pigment. He has mixed several shades of the same colour so he can paint a realistic looking skull. The only light in the room comes from a desk lamp forcing Martin to see only his work space clearly. He does not care for the clock telling him how late it is, only for the amount of work he has left to do. But his body cares and he's feeling tired. Recognizing that he may be about to fall asleep on the job, Martin reaches out for the can of Buzz Boost, his favourite energy drink. Unfortunately, there is but a mere drop left. The can gets shaken furiously in attempt to free any more drops of drink, but nothing.

Are you working hard as an art student? Don't overwork yourself like Martin; that said don't be too laid back either!
