Super Duper Su-Dros

Some time ago I was on the receiving end of a couple of Sumo suits, the inflatable kind. I have been meaning to do this for months!

So it turns out I'm no good at Sumo wrestling, the inflatable suit ruins me! It was still fun to try out though and thus the result is, Droey gets to mess around with some of his mates. Droey and Ichirou are both peaceful people and their more confident allies, John and Jirou have decided to place money on whoever might be the better sumo wrestler. Needless to say that the twins have won. Better luck next time Droey!

It was difficult finding references for any sumo wrestling, this is partly why it has taken me so long before I actually made a piece about sumo wrestling. It was only recently that I came across some pictures and I was able to translate them into the Drawson style. The John and Jirou in the back were not a part of the original image. You can find the original on one of my Pinterest boards.

Looking back in hindsight, maybe it was the socks that made me less than sufficient at inflatable sumo wrestling. In any case, I don't think John's going to put his money on me winning any sports, at least not for a while.

Resource and Humility - Batgirl and Supergirl

Nothing against Marvel comics, but I definitely prefer the DC comics characters. You may know my favourite is Batman and the Teen Titans (pre-Go!). So I am a happy chapped for there to be a heroine that somewhat merges these ideas, Batgirl! Though actually a young adult, Batgirl has been depicted as a teenager or child in multiple depictions of the superheroes. I have read a Batgirl comic, Batgirl is awesome.

There is also another hero like this, the female counterpart to the famous Superman, it's Supergirl, popular enough to be leading her own show currently! Since the Batman v Superman film, there has been the release of a series of fan comics between Batgirl and Supergirl, these are the absolute best and got me to like Supergirl as well. So here I decided to draw these two heroes together at long last.

I wanted to draw these two back to back and I think it has been one of the best ideas I've had. Their designs were able to blend their shapes nicely like an illustration on a playing card. It took me a couple of days to work on the line art and it's one of the most beautiful line arts I have ever made. I even decided during the line art to add Batman and Superman into the background as silhouettes, just to fill in the blank spaces created by the Superman shape acting as a background.

And then we come to colouring, which is a combination of markers and watercolour pencil. My colour choices felt perfect and looked so beautiful as a whole, I even swatches the colours prior to make sure nothing would go wrong. But oh was I wrong! I only had the black and the sky left to apply water to and then the horrific happened; the sky blended into Batgirl's skin! I tried my best to remove the sky from her face before the water could dry away, but even worse happened. The ink was picked up and the entire upper lip was smeared! My hard work up until now was a pride of my sketchbook and now that was all lost to a bleed. However was I to make this presentable?

Here is a view of the situation I was faced with.

Now I remember seeing in numerous sketchbook tours that some artists would censor their mistakes or blips by recreating their former glory on a separate layer of paper or a post-it note. I happened to have a scrap piece of paper that was roughly the same tone as the paper in my sketchbook. This gave me the idea to recreate Batgirl's face (below the mask only) and so I dredges the outline of her nose, lips and chin. Granted the shape of her face was slightly different now but it was as close as I was going to get without losing my patience. I then inked and coloured the sample, but I took an extra precaution to reassure myself the same mistake couldn't happen again. The sky was recreated separately and the face became a cutout. I would stick the face over my finished sky and there would be no bleeding. After that, the amended sample was stuck over my mistake and now even though there is a slightly noticeable bevel in the illustration, Batgirl finally looks equal to Supergirl in quality!

I may be a perfectionist but I am still prone to mistakes, but this artwork is a show of resource and that if you make a mistake, it's not impossible to fix. Granted this is a simple method that could be self taught to anyone but it's about having the calm to do so and not giving up on your art. I almost did that with this and I am very glad not to have done so. Given that this piece is about superheroes, I think it's fair to say that I was able to serve justice to this masterpiece!

Star and Marco [Finally some SVTFOE fan art!]

I am a fan of Star Versus (that and Star being how I will refer to the show in short) and have watched just about all of it to date, that is as far as the British have gotten into the show. However around the time of starting the blog, Season 2 was coming to an end so I was trying to avoid spoilers. It didn't help that the series would end on a cliffhanger that would be concluded in Season 3, months before we could see it. I have had to avoid this show until now, and so could finally enjoy being a fan once more. To commemorate this, here is a Drawson style depiction of the two main characters.

What's lovely about pencils is that they don't have to be special and privy for their colours to be mixed together. I found myself having to do this for most of the colours in this piece. I did have a colour for Star's dress but it was a bit bright and needed toning down with a slate grey. Marco's hair was a three colour combination of dark brown, maroon and black! I know this artwork is only a case of flat colouring but if you think you're artwork is looking pretty flat and you'd rather it not, then using multiple coloured pencils per surface is a great way to add more dimension. Black (unless the colour is a completely desaturated grey) is not a good option by the way, I haven't used black to shade for a long time now and it makes everything so much better!

The laser effect is something I don't think I've tried since I started out on this blog and I love it. It requires being careful not to do anything in the area meant to be kept white for optimal effect, but if you have a white pen then you should be okay.

These two transferred into Drawson style pretty well. Their body proportions are close to the same and despite losing their rounded cheeks they still have room below the eyes for expressions very suited to themselves. I was glad to be able to fit the hearts on Star's cheeks. This turned out nicely and  is a good dip into the waters of Star Versus. Chances are more fan art will be on the way, when I feel the need to create more!

Evil Counterparts | Foey and Plottie

How do I explain myself this time? There was an idea that had been lingering in the back of my mind, a numerous chat and it led to this. Now we have these two villains, counterparts to Droey Drawson and Lottie Line. Maybe they're from an alternate reality, or did Agrius create them specifically for our heroes' demise, maybe one day we'll know.

So that was end goal for this masterpiece, villainous variants. This was an idea I was feeling passionate enough about to go full out and use my favourite style of illustration (for that I don't mean drawing in the Drawson style), making use of my Microns, brush markers and coloured pencils all together! It took me quite a few days to put this together and by the looks of it, I can say it paid off.

Foey was an idea I had in my mind for a long time. I always wanted to make a Reverse Flash character that would par against Droey. This would be his official debut, and he was finally granted his name. I took the Droey design and started to make little physical changes. The first change was the star symbol on the cap, turning it upside down creates a satanic symbol. It felt like a no-brainier to make this change. To add a bit more black to the colour scheme I gave Foey a leather jacket and a smudge glove (not that I am against either of those). The trousers were changed, removing details from the waist to make up for the splatters at the bottom of the trouser legs.

The hair was given sharper edges and my moustache and stubble were replaced with a goatee. One change that I didn't intend to make was the shirt, it came to me that as a villain he should have something deadlier than a spoon on his shirt, so a knife was the answer. The most obvious difference between Foey and Droey would be the colour schemes, Foey clearly replacing blue with orange. This works due to being the complimentary colour to blue but also because I've never really done orange.

Unlike Foey, Plottiedoes not go the lengths of choosing a contrasting colour scheme but instead a goes for a darkened scheme. Greys are black and links are maroon. I drew a little inspiration from the Evil Queen for the headwear and converted her pinafore into armoured dungarees.

This piece took me a week in whole to create, sketches included! While I'd like to be able to work faster, I think the time paid off in this case to become one of the most beautiful things in the sketchbook. Want to see more for Fory and Plottie, or even put them up against their counterparts? Be sure to let me know!

Ichirou and Jirou Katou - Remember these guys?

As the title implies, you may have seen this duo before, though they looked very different the last time they were on this blog, over a year ago! Well now they are back and official with a new look and a lot more potential!

To the left is Ichirou, a calm and sensible man. He is the older of the two and tries his best to keep his  half brother in line. On the right is Jirou, the Technobian with an image. Jirou is a special experiment to replicate the human design, he is mounded after his brother who volunteered to the experiment. Jirou is cocky and funny, proud of his Technobian traits that make him different to most of his kind.

These two characters both come from Japan and have a shared gift of synchronised swimming. This seems to be the only form of art or performance that can actually take advantage of having twins, I looked up all the art forms and only swimming was officially synchronised! It additionally saves me from designing these two any swimwear, their costumes from their first appearance are perfect!

I don't intend for these two to be as prominent as the other characters just yet,my ou can expect to see them again in the future. I'll even have to make a piece of them doing what they do best, would make a good symmetry challenge!

Funko Pops - What If?

I think the title explains it all but I'll explain it a little more. While I was doing my style challenge, I thought about doing the Funko Pop style but then I questioned, what if the Droey's Draws characters had Funko Pop figures? Here's what I think they would look like.

I believe on average you can get six in a range before adding more if they sell well. With that in mind I made six of the characters into Funko Pop figurines. From top left to bottom right they are Tenvad Drawson, Droey Drawson, Agrius Moth, Anne Natalie, Ida Noe and John Esposito. Okay so I might have taken a liberty here, I think that two of six are supposed to be variants of pre-existing figurines whereas I have made six original designs.

Tenvad was a simple design though unlike everyone else she has white eyes. I have found out since characters can get coloured eyes as shown on the Starfire Funko. Had I have known this I would have given everyone eyes matching to their iris. Additionally I think her webcam eye might be a bit small for a Funko pop figure but I'd rather not leave anything out.

Droey and John come with props, the Sword of Star and a pizza box respectively. If there was to be a different variation of a character, I assume it would be Droey without his sword. Droey was the first Funko drawn and so the proportions might be a bit off, particularly in the arms. By the time I got around to Anne I had improved considerably.

Agrius was quite fun to work with, though a bit challenging given that he has four arms. I made the upper arms symmetrical and then gave the lower arms their own poses. As a Funko I'm not sure how great Agrius looks but maybe you all have a different opinion.

There's something special about John and Ida's Funkos, I'd love to have these two in particular as collectibles. Though Ida's legs look a bit short and the same for John's beard, I really like their Funkos and would probably grab them the moment I see them on shelves. If only these were real products.

Flamingo Dress

I saw some face painting of a flamingo and it looked like a masquerading mask. This inspire me to cr ate what was intended to be a ball gown for a masquerade ball, but I don't think this dress design would qualify for that now. Either way it's a dress with a mask and inspired by a flamingo.

The physical design of the dress, needless to say, is designed to resemble the flamingo. The gloves and shoes are based on the beek and the hair of the model is actually inspired by the flamingo's neck. The dress has actual feathers, which are the indigo sections of the dress. The only indigo section not to be made of feathers is the headband. The reason the dress is shorter than a ball gown is because I wanted a fair amount of the legs to be visible, as is the case with flamingos.

The choice of colour obviously comes from actual flamingos, though the only colour that is exception to the rule is the indigo colouring used on the feathers. This is because the face painting that inspired this piece actually used pink and paint the flamingo.

Here you can see a few sketches of preparation for the dress. There is one particular aspect of this piece that I struggled with and that was the legs. The angle of the legs when wearing a dress or skirt is actually rather difficult for me to draw. I encouraged myself to do it anyway so as to get the practice, hopefully I will find some references to get some more practice and struggle less when drawing this pose in future.

Overall this was a dip into waters I am more of a stranger to. My attempts at dress design could probably be better but then it could also be much worse. The more characters that I draw or create, the better my costume design is going to get. It's all just a matter of time and I'll just make sure to be having a ball while that time passes.

Style Challenge | Droey Drawson

It's taken me long enough, finally I'm doing a style challenge! Today I've been remoulded to fit seven different franchises.

Starting top left to bottom right, there's the Mr. Men. You've seen some Mr. amen style art on the blog most probably, I did a few pieces last summer. I was going to be blue skinned but I decided instead to go white so that the hat and shoes would better stand out. I still kept the nose blue, and used the standard trainers used by several mister men.

Next up is Gravity Falls. I love Gravity Falls, and back in February 2017 I drew the Doctor Who cast in Gravity Falls style. I like to think I did the style justice, my body is based on one of the teenagers first seen in the episode with the haunted shop. Additionally I decided to give myself a symbol like the ones used on the wheel used against Bill Cipher. Given my shirt has a spoon on it, I chose that to be the symbol that would be used to represent me.

The PowerPuff Girls are a style I find particularly easy to draw, I loved this show in it's former glory. While it would take a fair amount of practice to master a convincing bunch of Townsville citizens, the PowerPuffs themselves have a very distinctive and consistent look between each other. If anything was a struggle with this one, it was working on the cap which is facing forward. The only Chemical X subject o wear a cap would be Brick who wears it backwards. I was able to find art of his cap where I would draw the peek as if it were on the front, thus problem solved. A little bit of trivia for you, Brick and Boomer were voiced by Rob Paulsen, the same voice behind Ninja Turtles Raphael and Donatello!

The largest one on this page (unintentionally) is Fairly Odd Parents. I did enjoy this show in it's early years and love the Butch Hartman art style. This one draws elements from Timmy Turner, Vicky and a random teenager male I found on Google Images. I like that an amount of the characters have legs like Miis, saving a bit of time which I assume was the point of that stylistic choice. I am aware that by this point Fairly Odd Parents has been declared over due to Butch leaving Nickelodeon. Sad news it may be but Fairly Odd Parents deserves a good rest by now. maybe one day it will return almost better than ever before.

My favourite of these is the Panty and Stocking styled Droey. This is an art style that is beautiful but by no means easy to replicate, and there are three other styles in the show alone that can be attempted. Artistically this is the best anime I can think of and I worked particularly hard to make this work out, including the changing width in the outlines. The cap was the hardest part since the only hat that has been seen worn is a police hat in their apocalypse episode. I think I might have made some of it up.

The last one to be done in colour is Codename Kids Next Door. I used to associate this art style with both Mr. Men and Sonic the Hedgehog. Having tried to actually replicate myself in this style, I have really seen it's individuality to be much stronger. I referred to the artwork for Chad and Mr. Boss in particular for this design. The shoes are taken from Abigail with my own little twist to make them look more like my own shoes.

The final one today is ASDF, which was incredibly simple to create. Though I think the moustache was improvised. That's literally all I can say for this one!

I would be interested in doing this one again. Which character would you like to see restyled and which styles do you want to see them in, I wouldn't recommend any amines I'm afraid!

Suits of Evil

So the YouTube Art Community did content themed on cards back in February and it reminded me of my own card based artwork that I did the year before I set up my blog, so they at long last have my attention again.

What you see above is their current designs, depicted in my realism style. It's pointless telling you which is which since their logos are a part of each design. This was nice to do, I've always been fond of these designs and to bring them back into the present makes them more of a delight to look at. These character designs were intended to be criminals (Heart's profession being illegal in the USA).

The original designs were drawn in a Chibi style, I had recently been watching some of Mark Crilley's Chibi videos and had given all four of them the same body proportions! Here below you can see the originals, drawn on squared paper.

I was drawing these in 2016, the year I was getting back into art so I was just messing about in a squared book that I had been using for miscellaneous sketches and drawings. It might be worth looking back into the book for anything else I could redraw to present to you in the present day. There's not much else I can say about this, just that one day I might bring them to the Drawson style; if their designs could suit.
